Your Voice for Change

Meet Preston Smith, Your Candidate

Welcome to my campaign! I am Preston Smith, running for County Assessor to bring transparency and integrity to our community. Together, we’ll address key issues affecting our residents and ensure that every voice is heard. Join me in this journey for a brighter future!

A closer look at Preston's journey

For 14 years, I represented the Blue Springs School District on the Jackson County Board of Equalization.

In 2019, I saw first-hand how the assessment was done improperly, violating the state laws of proper notice, no physical inspections and widely disparate assessment increases between the better-off suburbs in the county and the lower-income inner city. Nearly one-third of the parcels received exactly a 14.9 percent increase from the 2018 value. But in the inner city of Kansas City, increases of more than 50 percent widely occurred.

In 2023, I helped spearhead the challenge to Jackson County over the inaccurate, illegal and unfair assessments, cumulating with my serving as the expert witness for the state Attorney General in two trials against Jackson County.

I want to serve the County’s taxpayers with a fair, transparent office that will work to fix the errors of the past and restore credibility to the office.

I have dedicated my life to serving people and trying to make life better for them.

I worked as a news reporter for 10 years, exposing government corruption . With a background in public service and a Master’s degree in Public Administration, he understands the needs and concerns of the residents. I have served for six on the Blue Springs Planning Commission, and Board of Zoning Adjustment. For more than 20 years, I have worked with public school districts, providing demographic information to help them with long-range planning.  I am committed to transparency and integrity in his office, ensuring every voice is heard and every concern is addressed.

Focus Areas for Change

Discover the key issues that matter to our community. I am committed to transparency and accountability in local government. Here are the main priorities : ending the contract with Tyler Technologies, following the State Tax Commission orders to roll back the 2023 and 2024 assessments to 2022 values, plus no more than 15%, setting sale prices in the tax rolls for a property, finding taxpayers who received preferential treatment and increase their values, fix the data, make all data/information used to determine assessed values online for all to see, and rebuild the trust in County government.
